Advice: Resume Help: How To Write Your Own Resume

Almost everyone needs a resume on file, or ready to send-off. Americans in Atlanta or anywhere else simply love to change jobs, and employers like to fire employees before they have enough tenure for retirement benefits. These are simple facts of working life. So, what if you want to write your own resume?

Well, many times writing your own resume is not a great idea, but it can be done. Why? A resume is the first test an applicant has for the position they are pursuing. Whether or not they write it, it is their responsibility and final product even if delegated. (Thus, most applicants hire a professional to craft a really polished resume for them.)

But, if you choose to do it yourself, how do you write your own standard resume? Answer: Very carefully and with much planning. This is just as true for resumes in Atlanta or resumes written in New York City.

For starters, you must gather and write down/type-up your relevant info. This includes:

CONTACT INFO: Exact Name, Phone Numbers, E-mail, and Street Address.

OBJECTIVE: Think about the purpose of the resume, the specific job or type of job or company desired.

ADJECTIVES: What are 6 or 8 adjectives related to your objective that describe you?

SKILLS & TALENTS: What do you excel at, and why? How? Will these skills apply to the desired position? Licenses? List them. Also, what basic functional skills do you possess?

QUOTE (optional): A good quote from yourself about work ethics is nice, not mandatory.

PROFESSIONAL/WORK EXPERIENCE: Work history with company/organization names, cities, dates of employment, duties, responsibilities, awards, acheivements, etc.

EDUCATION: List your education (if you are older forget high school). Schools, colleges/universities, special training, job-related training, odd courses or classes, majors, dates attended, cities, degrees, specialties, activities, organizations, awards, acheivements, etc...

Okay.....

Next, after gathering info, you must organize and assimilate the data into a neat and crisp format that presents a great snapshot of yourself, making someone want to see more. (The whole objective of a resume is to get interviews.) No one wants a detailed life story.

There are many resume formats and arrangements; use your discretion. I like a heading area with contact info, then a quote, skill section, work experience section, and then an education section - but it all depends upon the information for the resume.

TIP: Rarely is an "OBJECTIVE" section actually included; just work with it in mind, and include the specific position in the cover letter (if necessary).

Almost needless to say, but I will, double-check everything, especially spelling and grammar and typing - then save the resume a few times under different file names for variations and adjustments - depending upon the positions sought.
